Gift Ideas

I couldn't decide where to place some of the things I make, so I made this page for gifts. Don't get me wrong, bowls, boxes, rubber band guns, chess pieces, picture frames, in fact most all of what I make makes fabulous gifts so don't stop here!

Large Cutting Board - 12"x16"

One of my favorite things about my products is that they are intended to be used. I made a couple of these cutting boards for a friend for Christmas presents last year, and she tells me that the people she gave them to are afraid to use them because they just LOOK SO NICE! So SAD! Use them, folks. So long as you cut along the grain, and oil them occasionally, they can keep looking nice for a long, long time. And they're more sanitary than plastic, not requiring high-temperature sanitization. Bacteria is sucked down into the wood where it starves, rather than festering in the grooves that inevitably form in plastic boards.

At 12 inches by 16 inches, this size is perfect for heavy use on large for-the-family sized meals. Order from domestics (walnut, maple, cherry, mahogany), or add some exotics (purpleheart, yellowheart, bloodwood) in for some stunning color. Add a hand-burned name like in the example shown, or a drip groove around the edge on one side, or a handle on one end - just let me know if you want a combination not shown on the drop-down. The image shown is the exotics option with a woodburned name.

Hand-Turned Conductor's Baton

The Conductor's Baton gained widespread use in the early 19th century, as a means to make the movements and direction of the conductor more visible to the orchestra. Light woods and teardrop-shaped handles are customary, with lengths between 10" and 24" most common. Professional conductors often have them custom-made to suit their physical demands and nature of performance.
The baton shown above is with a holly shaft and a purpleheart handle, total length about 15 inches. The shaft should be both light weight and light color. Maple offers a less-expensive alternative to holly. The handle can be any number of woods, from more common woods like walnut, purpleheart, etc. to exotics like rosewood, ebony, or cocobolo. Engraving and pyrography is also available for an additional fee. Email me to discuss specifics.
Price as shown - $60.00. Add a pouch for an additional $10.00

Acrylic Consecrated Oil Vial Keyring

My recent projects include Wizard School House-colored Wands using acrylic materials for the handles. It was a bit of a stretch to me to use a material other than wood - matter of principle I guess - but they turned out well (sorry, turned - haha) so I saved a scrap and tried it for a keyring oil vial. I like the results.

From top to bottom, the vials pictured here are Sapphire (top), Lime and Black Marble, Jade Swirl, and Crimson and Black Marble(bottom). You can choose from any of the other colors found here or here.

Because the materials are a little more pricey than the wood I usually use, and instead of four grades of sandpaper I have to go through 12 grades, these cost a bit more - $34.95

Acacia Consecrated Oil Vial

Acacia wood is one of those historically or religiously significant woods. It's what the Ark of the Covenant was made from. Makes sense, then, to use it for a consecrated oil vial, don't you think? Pictured above with chrome, convex shape with three burned grooves. Gold finish is also available, as are other shapes. Price: $25.00

Consecrated Oil Vial - Box Elder Burl

These consecrated oil keyring vials are turned from stabilized dyed Box Elder burl, with gold-plated parts. The Box Elder tree is a variety of maple tree, also known as Boxelder Maple and Maple Ash. A small, fast-growing, and short-lived tree, it has generally weak wood with little use commercially, except for the burls, which have beautiful coloring and grain patterns.

The burl can then be impregnated with dye with varied results - sometimes it soaks through, other times areas are left their natural color for striking results. The dyed box elder burls are available in yellow, red, blue, black, green, purple, brown, and magenta.

The vial parts are available in chrome or gold plated.

A unique, handmade, a perfect gift for any Elder, whether dad for Fathers Day, brother for Mission Farewell, or a son for his ordination to the priesthood. Inside is a glass vial that can just as easily hold perfume or essential oils.

Turned Wood Laser Pointer

Laser Pointers - good for tormenting dogs and children, and with the excuse that you need it for work...These turned wood laser pointers though - they're something unique and classy. I'm sorry to say that they're not cheap though. The minimum I can offer them for, because of the unique tools I need to make them, and the cost of the parts, is $65.00. BUT if you're looking for a unique gift for the man or woman who has it all, this can do it. The pointers shown are from bloodwood, ebony, and olive. Or you can choose any of the other woods shown on my web page if they're available. I can also create inlaid or laminated custom designs but that will cost extra.

Bocote Wood Magnifying Glass

This magnifying glass is about 2" in diameter, with high a high-magnification glass lens. It's made with Bocote, with a creamy brown color and wavy black stripes, making for striking contrast. Bocote is from a small tree native to Central and South America, sometimes called Mexican Rosewood. Because of its striking color and grain, it's popular for accents and turnings.

Sliding Lid Gift Box - 3.5"x5"x3" - with Sego Lily Pyrography

This sliding-lid box is made from walnut and maple, with a sego lily burned into the top. I made this for my wife for Mothers Day this year. This box measures about 5 inches by 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches high. The sego lily has particular significance to my wife - she has pioneer ancestry, some of whom may have depended at least in part on the bulbs of this flower for sustenance during the first hard winters in Utah.

The possibilities for these boxes are endless. I used finger joints on this box. Splines, or keyed miters also work well. The sliding lid can be replaced by a solid lid with sides that lifts off, or with a hinged and latched top. I can use really any wood commercially available - save money by using domestic softwoods, or go all out on exotic hardwoods. And I can burn into it just about anything you can give me a line drawing of. Email me with your ideas for a custom quote. If you want something similar to my wife's box, it will be $45.00.

Mason Jar Gumball Machine - Hand-Turned Wood

Mason-Jar gumball machines come in many shapes and sizes. This one is made from solid pine, and hand-turned to set it apart from other designs. A hidden catch keeps the mechanism from coming out - just push it in and pull it out for another piece of candy - no coin required (your kids will like that part. In fact, this little project is one my kids don't want me to sell - they want it for themselves. Don't worry, though, I will make more...)

Choose your finish, or choose maple or walnut or other hardwoods if you want to make it fancy. A perfect gift for Mom's rustic decor, or dad's desk at work.

Price does not include jar - special shipping for glass makes it cheaper for you to buy a box of 12 at your nearest grocery store. I can add it if you want, just let me know. By clicking on "Order Now," buyer agrees to these terms.

Wood Keyring or Pendant Urn Jewelry

One of my recent customers had a great idea - I make these little containers that can come on a key ring or a black laniard, and have marketed them for essential oils, religious oils, or perfume. He ordered several, but for use as urns for his beloved dogs that passed away. To some it might seem almost comical, but believe me, my dog is a member of our family, loved almost as if it were one of our children, and to me it is heartwarming that others feel the same way.

These keyring urns are hand-made with attention to detail, from hardwoods from around the globe. Each is individually made, usually after you place your order, and to your specifications as to shape, wood type, metal plating, etc, for a keepsake that is worthy to preserve the remains of your loved one or pet in a classy, unobtrusive, dignified manner.

For a full selection of these containers, see my Oil Vials page, and keep in mind, what will hold a glass oil vial will do just fine as urn jewelry as well.

Shelf-Top Oil Vial

A friend of mine was looking for an oil vial for his consecrated oil that was for his home supply - something nicer than the cheapo plastic containers that you get at the LDS Distribution Centers. I thought this was the perfect solution - hand-turned from cocobolo (other woods are available) and made with attention to detail. Inside is a glass vial with a threaded cap. The possibilities are endless. For an exotic wood like cocobolo, the price starts at $35. Domestics could be less. Email me for a quote.

Kingwood Consecrated Oil Vial

Kingwood, also called Violetwood or Violete because of its purple cast, is from a slender low tree native to Brazil. It is called kingwood because in the 18th and 19th century it was a favorite wood of French kings for their furniture. It is fairly rare, and its fine texture and stability makes it a prized wood for inlay work, wood turning, and fancy accessories.

Zebrawood and Chrome Consecrated Oil Keyring Vial

This vial is hand-turned from African Zebrawood. Also called Zebrano, African zebrawood trees can reach in excess of 150'. Diameters commonly measure between 5' and 7'. Heartwood is light golden-yellow with streaks and veining of dark chocolate brown. Dries slowly, and tends to surface check and end-split during seasoning. Coarse texture and interlocked grain must be surfaced wih care. High-luster finish on this wood makes it extremely decorative.
