This vial was made for a customer to use for consecrated oil, and is made from Cocobolo, with chrome components. The hourglass shape was chosen because it feels as slight in the pocket as a straight profile, but highlighted the diagonal grain.
This second vial shows a more typical piece of cocobolo - dark, attractive grain, but without the sapwood.
Cocobolo is a medium sized South American tree growing up to 2' diameter and 90' tall, heartwood color varies from bright orange to deep red, with attractive varied stripes of yellow, orange and black. Darkens on exposure. Its fine texture and excellent color make Cocobolo one of the most popular exotic woods, and I can see why - I love working with it. It takes a finish so well, it cuts so smoothly, it's really choice.
Normally I charge $25 for these keyring oil vials, whether gold or chrome, and no matter the wood. For the first one, I paid extra attention to it, working with the customer to select the wood from several pieces, selecting the shape, etc. to make it intensely personal so it was extra. One touch was selecting a piece of cocobolo with the sapwood (whiter wood) which is sometimes hard to do.
